The S1 Art Management Study Program was originally established in 2014 as a D4 program under the Faculty of Fine Arts, Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta, established in response to the urgent need for professional human resources in the field of art management in Indonesia. The birth of this program was marked by a mature and participatory formulation process, involving institutional leaders, lecturers, and art actors from the arts and culture industry.
The forerunner of this program originated from the mandate of the Directorate General of Higher Education (Dirjen Dikti) through letter No. 647/E.E2/DT/2014 which encouraged the establishment of a Diploma IV Arts Management study program. Responding to the mandate, ISI Yogyakarta held a series of intensive meetings since July 2014, starting from the institute level leadership meeting to the faculty level. In these forums, important figures such as Prof. Dr. M. Agus Burhan, Prof. I Wayan Dana, Dr. Mikke Susanto, and practitioners such as Heri Pemad and Setyo Harwanto were present.
Furthermore, the TKS Study Program was developed with the vision of becoming a leader in arts management in Indonesia and Asia in 2032, based on the values of Pancasila. The formal legal journey of this program reached an important milestone on November 18, 2015, when the Decree of KEMENRISTEK DIKTI RI No. 119/KPT/I/2015 was issued which officially changed its status from D4 to Strata 1 (S-1) Study Program.
From the beginning, the TKS Study Program was designed as an academic space that bridges the art world and the managerial-curatorial world. The curriculum is multidisciplinary, touching on the management of fine arts, performing arts, recording media arts, as well as culture and tourism. In its implementation, TKS emphasizes a practice-based learning approach, direct involvement with galleries, museums, and art spaces, as well as international cooperation.
With a strong academic foundation, a progressive vision, and an extensive network, TKS has transformed into one of the pioneers in arts management education in Indonesia. It not only produces graduates who are ready to become art program managers and curators, but also cultural actors who are sensitive to social dynamics, technology, and global challenges.
